Impact Chess at Webster Elementary in Minneapolis

It went great! There’s were about 8 3rd-5th graders there but the sign up sheet had two more missing so we should have 10 total members. We didn’t have an instruction board yet so we spent the first half hour or so all around a chess board talking about how the pieces move, how to set up the board, etc. Then they split up into 2 teams and played a game against each other where they talked about what moves were best and the basics. That lasted for about another half hour and we wrapped it up spending the last 45 minutes with the kids playing against each other which they had a great time doing. They all got along great but a few of them need a little motivating to get playing and focused as they aren’t super excited to be playing chess, but I think it will change. By the end, they were all having a great time and we’re pretty competitive with each other. I forgot to get photos, but I will make sure to get some this week. All in all, it was a really fun time and I’ll look forward to it every week from here on out.
